MIKE'S NEW YEAR.

Filipino artists took a trip down memory lane in a two-day concert titled, “90s Music Comes Alive.”

Rock bands Chicosci, Tanya Markova, December Avenue, Typecast and Hijo; pop group 1:43 and solo artists Nyoy Volante, Sabrina, Tricia Garcia and Toto Sorioso headlined the concert for the album launch of “90s Music Comes Alive” under MCA Music, together with Samsung Galaxy S Wifie 5.0.

The two-day concert, attended not only by '90s kids but the younger generation as well, was held at the Eastwood Central plaza on Friday, January 13 and at Venice Piazza at McKinley Hill on Saturday, January 14.

Radiohead, EMF, Paula Cole and Cranberries and other '90s artists returned full force.

December Avenue took the stage with a cover of Paula Cole’s “I Don’t Wanna Wait,” a popular theme song from American TV series “Dawson’s Creek,” while Typecast did a rendition of Keith Sweat’s “Twisted.” Tanya Markova, dressed in their usual flamboyant costumes and white make-up, performed Radiohead’s “Creep.”

Nyoy went acoustic with Indigo Girls’ “Power of Two,” while Toto Sorioso covered Lisa Loeb’s “Stay.”

Owning the stage

Chicosci owned the stage when its frontman Miggy Chavez ordered the fans, even those who were staying outside, to stand in front as they performed EMF’s hit “Unbelievable.”

“We personally chose “Unbelievable” by EMF, it’s not dictated by the label. They gave us few suggestions like Radiohead, pero pinili namin yung masaya,” Miggy said in an interview backstage.

Miggy is a proud '90s kid, having grown up to the music of Nirvana, Deftones and Metallica. This is why he is happy to be part of the album and concert giving tribute to the '90s music.

“I grew up to the '90s music, listening to bands like Nirvana, Deftones, Metallica, mga panahon pa ng tape. Also Red Hot Chilli Peppers,” Miggy shared.

The '90s was also the time when Miggy formed a band with grade school friends and bandmates Mong Alacaraz and Calde Calderon.

“Mga '96 or '97, nagpa-plant na yung seeds ng band. We started playing na nila Mong, Calde, classmates kase kami since grade school eh,” he said.

Miggy then recalls the fashion of the times: “Naka-elephants kami. Malakaking pants, Estussy, Air Walk.”

Pinay lounge singer plunks more than P1-M into debut album

MANILA, Philippines – After many years of wowing the international audience through performances in five-star hotels from as far as away as Almaty, Kazakhstan to nearby Jakarta, Indonesia, Filipino lounge artist Tria Bascon has finally come up with an album---to the tune of P1-M plus plus!

Note that these days when technology allows many recording artists to make an album at home, spending a million on one is unheard of. From a business point of view, and in light of the sorry state of the local music scene, the cost of making Tria’s maiden offer doubles the risk of ever recouping the investment.

Yet Tria, who bankrolled the project, just laughed when these things were pointed out to her.

“I knew from the beginning that the cost would reach at least seven-digits. Pero what can I do? I want to work with the best musicians and to use only live instruments in the tracks,” she told Bulletin Entertainment in a recent interview.

One of the best musicians she pertains to is her longtime pianist Moreno Donadel, an Italian. As for the musical arrangements, she even got acclaimed vocal group The CompanY to do back-up singing on some of the tracks.

Tria is probably still abroad as of this writing but she plans to return and stay longer in the Philippines in order to promote her album dubbed “Wanderlust.” As the title suggests, the music and the singing in her opus reflect her travels and how these have influence her musicality. Aside from English and Filipino, Tria can sing in Chinese, Spanish, Italian and Japanese.

The singer makes no bones about her intention to cater to the AB market and foreigners. Although she’d be more than delighted if her songs are played on local radio and if majority of the people here end up embracing her talents, Tria says she is “realistic” and accepting of her niche.

“That’s how I started and it’s how it’s always been. I’ve never sung in bars but always in lounges and five-star hotels. Oh, I’d sing in fiestas if people ask me to---and gladly so---but at this point in my career, I already know my sound, who my audience is, and where I want to take my career,” she said.

“I have no illusions but I have my aspirations.”

Tria was discovered in Cebu and by accident. As bartender then, the owner of the club she worked at chance in on her singing when she thought no one was around. He gave her a break when the featured singer of his club did not show up one time and the rest, as they say, is history.

The singer said she always makes it known to her foreign audience that she is Filipino. In everything she does, Tria is conscious that she will be seen by others not just as herself but for her nationality.

“Kaya nga pinagbuti ko din itong album ko dahil gusto ko malaman ng mundo na ang gawang Pinoy, world-class at quality all the way,” said she whose musical style go from disco and broadway to rock and pop songs.

The promotional single off “Wanderlust” is “I’m Old Fashioned” which comes with a music video. Other tracks in the album are “With A Little Help From My Friend,” “The Party’s Over,” “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” “La Belle Vie,” “Two For The Road,” “Anos Dourados,” and “Magkikita Pa Rin Naman Tayo.”

NHI to file complaint against Arnel Pineda's rendition of "Lupang Hinirang

Share

Journey frontman Arnel Pineda is in a bit of a pickle right now. The National Historical Institute (NHI) said that it would be filing a complaint against the rock singer's "wrong" rendition of the Philippine National Anthem. Arnel sang "Lupang Hinirang" at Manny Pacquiao's welterweight fight yesterday (Sunday, March 14) against Ghanaian boxer Joshua Clottey.

The Institute is mandated to ensure that the National Anthem, the Philippine flag, and its national symbols are respected.

It adheres to Republic Act 8491 (under Section 37) or the Flag and Heraldic Code, which states: "The national anthem must be sung in accordance with the original musical arrangement of composer Julian Felipe, who gave it a marching tempo. Violators may be fined P5,000 to P20,000 or jailed for a year."

DUTY-BOUND PROSECUTORS. Justice Secretary Alberto Agra stated in an interview with GMA News that prosecutors are ready to deal with the forthcoming complaint of the NHI. He added that the Department of Justice (DOJ) is duty-bound to attend to all complaints. However, Sec. Agra admitted that he was not able to watch the televised bout of Pacquiao and Clottey last Sunday.

WARNINGS MULTIPLY. This is not the first time the NHI has warned artists who deviate from the National Anthem's established version. According to the NHI, Charice Pempengco, Jennifer Bautista, Christian Bautista, Martin Nievera, and La Diva altered it. Sarah Geronimo, Lani Misalucha, and Kyla sang the National Anthem longer than it should have been. All of these singers were criticized by the NHI.

Although, so far, nobody has been punished under Republic Act 8491.

Former President Corazon Aquino, people power icon, passes away

Former President Corazon Aquino flashes the ‘Laban’ sign as she speaks to thousands of people at an anti-Charter change rally on Sept. 21, 1997 at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila. AP-Bullit Marquez
MANILA, Philippines - Former Philippine President Corazon Aquino, icon of people power in the Philippines and around the world, passed away at 3:18 a.m. Saturday, her son, Senator Benigno Aquino III, said. The official cause of death was cardiorespiratory arrest.

The 76-year-old Aquino was diagnosed with colon cancer in March of last year and was treated with chemotherapy. Last May, she underwent surgery to remove parts of her colon and was brought to the Makati Medical Center in June due to loss of appetite. She never left the hospital, as her declining condition sparked a wave of emotion in the country and prompted the widespread appearance of yellow ribbons - on trees, car antennas, and even the Web.

“She would have wanted us to thank each and everyone of you for all your continued love and support. It was her wish for all of us to pray for one another and for our country," Senator Aquino said.

He added that other details will be announced later in the day.

Dressed in her signature yellow, Mrs. Aquino rallied the middle class in a series of protests culminating in the 1986 people power revolt that toppled the 20-year regime of strongman Ferdinand Marcos and swept her to the presidency.

She blamed the Marcos government for the assassination of her husband, opposition leader Benigno “Ninoy" Aquino Jr., who was gunned down at the Manila airport upon returning from exile in 1983.

The former housewife reluctantly took over as Marcos’ main challenger, becoming an international icon of democracy after her victory sparked a wave of pro-democracy movements around the world. Time Magazine named Mrs. Aquino its Woman of the Year in 1986.

-----------------

Mrs. Aquino succumbed to cardiorespiratory arrest at 3:18 a.m. at the Makati Medical Center, where she had been confined since last June. She was 76.

"She would have wanted us to thank each and everyone of you for all your continued love and support. It was her wish for all of us to pray for one another and for our country," Mrs. Aquino’s son, Sen. Benigno “Noynoy" Aquino III said in reading a part of the official statement.

Even before the official statement from the Aquino family, news of the former President’s demise started circulating on the Web.

The first tweet to break Mrs. Aquino’s death was posted at 4:40 a.m. by user Jeco_P. “Former President Corazon Aquino just passed away deepest condolences to jiggycruz (grandchild) and your family," the tweet read.- GMANews.TV
