'Devil Inside' lifts Hollywood spirits with $34.5M

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The fright film "The Devil Inside" scared up a monstrous $34.5 million opening weekend to help Hollywood exorcise its recent box-office demons, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The surprise hit from Paramount Pictures debuted well above industry expectations as horror fans crowded theaters for the low-budget tale about exorcists trying to free a woman possessed by evil spirits.

Between "The Devil Inside" and solid results for holdover films, Hollywood's business soared over the first full weekend of 2012 after a sluggish holiday season that ended a ho-hum year at the box office.
Overall domestic revenues totaled $144 million, up 29 percent from the same weekend last year, when "True Grit" led with $14.6 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.
Paramount already is well into profit with "The Devil Inside," an independently produced movie that the studio bought for $1 million. It's the latest such low-budgeted horror acquisition for the studio, which bought "Paranormal Activity" cheaply and turned it into a $100 million sensation that was followed by two hit sequels.

Like "Paranormal Activity" and another Paramount hit released in January, "Cloverfield," ''The Devil Inside" is a fictional tale shot in a mock documentary style.
According to Paramount, 59 percent of viewers for "The Devil Inside" were under 25 and 85 percent were under 35, prime viewers for Hollywood who had not turned up in their usual numbers for much of last year.

With a sales campaign that bypassed traditional newspaper and TV advertising in favor of online teasers and cryptic marketing, Paramount managed to intrigue young adults who have not been all that interested in the rush of family films and Academy Awards contenders that crowded into theaters over the holidays.
"The Devil Inside" was the only new wide release of the weekend after the holiday crush, historically a good time for something different to sneak in and become an unexpected hit, said Don Harris, head of distribution for Paramount.
"For that under-25, under-35 audience that's looking for something else, that first weekend in January has always been a great weekend to release a movie," Harris said. "When we saw that weekend open, we took it."

"The Devil Inside" bumped another Paramount hit, Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol," out of the top spot after two weekends at No. 1. "Ghost Protocol" slipped to No. 2 with $20.5 million, raising its domestic total to $170.2 million.
Just a day before "The Devil Inside" opened Friday, industry analysts had expected "Ghost Protocol" would remain No. 1 this weekend. The most optimistic forecasters figured "The Devil Inside" might manage $15 million, less than half the business it actually did.

"This one caught everyone looking, but the devil got his due," Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian said. "It's just very difficult to track the horror fan base, no question about it."
"The Devil Inside" is following the pattern of many horror movies, which pack in crowds on opening day then tumble quickly after that. With $16.85 million on Friday, "The Devil Inside" did nearly half of its business in the first day, with revenues falling to $11.75 million Saturday and an estimated $5.9 million Sunday.

Vic Sotto describes personal state as 'steady'

Article from Manila Bulletin

MANILA, Philippines – From festival box-office king to new grandfather, Vic Sotto has much to celebrate this new year. But apart from his continued success—as with “The Buzz” special co-host Ai Ai delas Alas’ description of him as “mayaman, pogi, box office king” in their taped interview on “The Buzz” aired on Jan. 1—showbiz watchers still haven’t lost interest in Bossing’s love life.

Following recent rumors of a blossoming relationship with “Eat Bulaga” co-host Pauleen Luna—this, despite still working with former flame, Pia Guanio (who insists, every chance she gets in interviews, on being happily married)—Ai Ai asked: “Kumusta naman ang heart mo?”

“Awww… Ikaw naman, tinanong mo pa, alam mo namang steady lang ako,” Vic replied, with a smile, obviously refusing to address the intrigues. “The word for the day is steady. ‘Pag sinabing steady, ‘pag pinagusapan ‘yung love life, parang ikaw lang, ‘di ba?”

He also expounded, “Ang love life, para sa akin, marami kang pagkukunan ng love life eh. Love life mo with your kids, ‘yung mga apo—lalo na ako may bago akong apo. Mga kaibigan, mga mahal mo sa buhay.

Love is an angel

As a new grandfather to Ondrea Bliss, the newborn baby girl of his son Oyo Boy Sotto and wife Kristine Hermosa, Vic shared his happiness over this recent development.

“Nakita ko ‘yung excitement ni Oyo at ni Tin. Although hindi ako nakapunta sa hospital, kumpleto yung report niya [Oyo] eh. From the house, ‘on our way to the hospital.’ Pagdating dun, ‘5 cm na.’ Tapos naging delivery room…”

He added, “A little after 12, nag-text na si Oyo. ‘Lumabas na siya! Yahoo!’ Ang una kong tinanong, ‘How’s the baby? How’s Tin?’ [Sagot niya,] ‘Everything’s okay.’”

Enteng, Ina: reunited?

Avatar 2: The Abyss

Share

James Cameron has a special affinity for the ocean. He's directed films such as "Titanic" and "The Abyss," not to mention his own deep-sea diving documentaries. So it shouldn't come as a huge surprise that his "Avatar" sequel

will focus on underwater life in the oceans of the fictional moon of Pandora.
"Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment -- a different setting within Pandora," Cameron told the LA Times, "and I'm going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won't be a rain forest. I'm not saying we won't see what we've already seen; we'll see more of that as well."

Pig joins stars for 'Nanny McPhee' sequel premiere

Share

LONDON (AFP) – Actress Emma Thompson led a pig down a blue carpet for the world premiere in London of her new film "Nanny McPheeand The Big Bang."
Thompson, who wrote and starred in the sequel to "Nanny McPhee", was joined by other cast members including US actress Maggie Gyllenhaal for the Leicester Square screening on Wednesday.
The film tells how the magical nanny helps a mother who is struggling to run a farm and look after her children while her husband is at war.
Gyllenhaal, who plays mother Isabel Green, praised Thompson, saying: "I'm her biggest fan and I know I'm not alone in thinking she is a brilliant genius."
Describing the challenges of making the film in Britain, director Susanna White said: "It was probably slightly crazy to work with children, animals, CGI and the British weather."
Comedian Bill Bailey joked that his animal co-stars were experienced actors who were unfazed by the prospect of appearing on the silver screen.
"These were proper stage pigs who had been in films before so they were all a bit blase really," he said.

Akihiro Sato, Daniel Matsunaga, and Fabio Ide star in indie comedy film D'Survivors

Share

Akihiro Sato, Daniel Matsunaga and Fabio Ide

Enjoy sina Akihiro, Daniel at Fabio sa paggawa ng pelikula because they get to play themselves.

AKIHIRO SATO. Hindi ang D' Survivors ang unang movie ni Akihiro, nakagawa na siya last year ng isang indie movie titled Handumanan. Nahasa na sa pag-arte si Akihiro through his TV shows on GMA-7: SRO Cinemaserye Moshi-MoshiDarna, atPanday Kids.

"I'm happy with the work that GMA-7 is giving me right now. I get to do other things aside from modeling," sabi ni Akihiro sa PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal).

Dagdag niya, "Right now, I'm in this movie [D'Survivors]. I play a special role here and I have a few funny scenes playing a character similar to the ones in the movieAvatar. They have to watch the movie in order to see it."

DANIEL MATSUNAGA.

"I really enjoy acting. Most especially in The Last Prince, I get to portray a role that I have to understand and really get the right performance. I took up an acting workshop to hone my skills and I'm continuing my lessons on my Tagalog. Now I can understand more Tagalog words.

"Here in the movie, it's not that hard in acting because it's very light. It's a comedy, so we are just having fun. This is my first movie and I am very excited for it to be finished," saad ni Daniel.

FABIO IDE.

"The world of showbiz is not that different from the world of modeling," sabi ni Fabio. "We all get to meet different people from both. And both are forms of entertainment. But now, I want to break into showbiz and things are really coming out great.

"I have this upcoming TV show for GMA-7 and now this movie. I'm really happy because I'm meeting more people every day. I get to meet the people from the entertainment business. I am constantly learning from this new experience in my career."

Surprising Voice Behind New 'Shrek' Villain

Share

Watch the trailer
When the first Shrek hit the silver screen in 2001, it wowed audiences with its fairy-tale storyline, its witty pop culture asides, and its impressive cast of voice actors: Mike Myers played the titular ogre; with Cameron Diaz as Fiona, his love interest; and Eddie Murphy as his wise-cracking donkey sidekick. In the two subsequent Shrek movies, other actors came on board to lend their talent and star power to the franchise -- Antonio Banderas, Justin Timberlake, even Larry King.
And for the latest and last movie in the franchise -- "Shrek Forever After" -- Myers and the gang returns along with new A-list talent, like Megan Fox who plays "The Princess in the Tower." But for the movie's chief bad guy, the silken-tongued Rumpelstiltskin, Dreamworks hired the voice talent of Walt Dohrn.
Who?
Unlike much of rest of the cast, Dohrn doesn't regularly walk the red carpet or make appearances on Letterman. Instead, he's a writer and animator who started out working on "SpongeBob SquarePants" before landing a gig on "Shrek 2." Since then, he worked his way up to Story Editor for this movie. So how did a guy with a below-the-line job land an above-the-line part? We tracked him down and found out.
"It just stuck," he told me.
During the very beginning of production, Dohrn and his colleagues would hash out the characters and plot with storyboards, mouthing out all the voices. Later, he recorded the dialogue of many characters, from Puss-in-Boots to Fiona, as a part of a scratch track for the animators to animate to. Everyone loved the way Dohrn brought Rumpelstiltskin to life.
"The whole time, we thought we're going to find an actor for the part," he said. He didn't know that he would be the actual, official voice of the movie's villain until Dreamworks Animation CEO Jeffery Katzenberg made the decision. By that point, Dohrn had already played the part, in various capacities, for over a year.
He said that he initially found working opposite the likes of Mike Myers daunting but those worries were soon assuaged. "He was great. He's a filmmaker himself so he knows what it's like to make a movie. And he's been doing the part so long that really knows the inside of Shrek's head."
The animator-turned actor also revealed how he got into the part. "My character shouts a lot. So before going into the booth, I would drink, like, 20 cups of coffee and get good and yelly."
So would this gig tempt him into the Hollywood fame machine? "It was sort of a joke around the office that I would go on to pursue my acting career, like appearing on 'Law & Order' or something." In the meantime, he seems plenty happy finishing up the movie in time for its May 21 release date.

First 'Eclipse' Trailer Thrills Twi-Hard Fans

Share

Since the release of "New Moon," us "Twilight" fanatics have been patiently waiting for four long months to get a preview of the franchise's third installment, "Eclipse."
On Wednesday, we were treated to a 10-second teaser trailer, and boy, what a tease it was! Even though I loved every bit of it -- especially Jacob's promise to Bella, "I'm going to fight for you until your heart stops beating" -- 10 seconds is just not enough.
But fret not, fellow Twi-Hards: Summit Entertainment wasted no time in releasing the full minute-and-a-half trailer this morning, and we have it here on Yahoo! Movies so that you can watch it on loop until every scene is engrained in your brain!

The 90-second first look focuses primarily on the oh-so-tense love triangle between Edward (Robert Pattinson), Bella (Kristen Stewart), and Jacob (Taylor Lautner). We first see a breathtaking view of Forks, Washington, with its deep-green forest and expansive mountain range. Then we're taken to Edward and Bella's meadow meeting grounds, where the couple embraces amid blooming blue flowers as the dreamy vampire makes a lifelong pledge to his mortal lover.
Evil soon appears in the form of Dakota Fanning as the formidable Jane, who's flanked by other Volturi members, warning that her coven leaders won't be happy to learn that Bella is still human and that they "don't give second chances."
Bella would be more than happy to oblige the Volturi's wishes, but in the next scene, Edward reminds her that becoming a vampire means suffering painful consequences, such as outliving the people she loves. Then, we see Bella with her father and later in Florida hugging her mother.
In swoops Bella's best friend, the hunky Jacob, who reminds her that she doesn't need to change to be with him, confesses that he's in love with her, and begs her to choose him over Edward. Oh-em-Jacob! Taylor is totally swoon-worthy in this moment.
The words "It All Begins With a Choice" flash, and though readers of the novels already know who Bella will ultimately choose, it's hard not to get excited over the debate of whether she'll pick the vampire or the werewolf.
As if Edward didn't feel bad enough for constantly placing Bella in harm's way, Jacob presses him to consider the idea that perhaps Bella might be happier and safer with him. As he's saying this to Edward, we see Bella watching the sunset, perhaps also contemplating to herself if Jacob really is the better choice.
Bryce Dallas Howard in 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse'
"On June 30" comes on screen (please, like we didn't already clear our calendars four months ago!), and the foreboding music alerts us that a threat is upon us. Bella announces in a frightened tone, "Edward, she found us." And with a magnificent leap and swoosh of fiery red hair, we get a glimpse of the "new" Victoria -- now played by Bryce Dallas Howard, who replaced Rachelle Lefevere. I went gaga over Rachelle's beautiful chase scene in "New Moon," so I'm not completely sold on Bryce just yet.

'Oz' Could be Next Big Film Franchise after "Harry Potter"

Share

It appears Dorothy Gale is, once again, not going to be in Kansas any more. With the "Harry Potter" franchise winding down, Warner Brothers has set their sights on building another franchise geared toward young adults based on one of the most popular films of all time, "The Wizard of Oz."
Warner Brothers has had two separate projects in developmentover the past year centered around wide-eyed Dorothy Gale from Kansas -- a role made iconic by Judy Garland in 1939 -- who finds herself swept off (literally) to a magical land full of eccentric creatures called Oz. The box-office take of"Alice in Wonderland" -- $133 million domestically, and counting -- makes this project seem even more attractive.
Warner Brothers' New Line division has a version of the film written by Darren Lemke -- who helped write "Shrek Forever After" -- and produced by "Twilight" producer Temple Hill.(It's only fitting that "Twilight" would somehow be connected to a potential teen hit.) This version would not have any musical numbers and would be more faithful to "Oz" author L. Frank Baum's source material.
The second version would be set closer to the present and most likely be even darker. Especially considering that it's written by Josh Olson, who is best known for writing the screenplay for the bleak Viggo Mortensen thriller, "A History of Violence."
"Oz" is tempting for Warner Brothers for quite a few reasons. First and foremost, it could possibly fill the void left when the "Harry Potter" franchise ends. "Potter," of course, attracted an audience that skewed to a younger adult crowd; the same demographic "Oz" would target.
L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" -- the book that "The Wizard of Oz" is based on -- is just the first story in a series that spans 14 books. All fourteen books are now part of public domain. The original film, however, is not in public domain. In other words: Any reproduction of an element that was solely a part of the film's story and not the book will have rights fees still associated.
